SMART HYDROGEN IN ICELAND

Iceland moves forward towards commercial hydrogen systems

VistOrka (the largest shareholder in Icelandic New Energy)  has recently allocated more than $3.5 million US to take the next steps into a hydrogen future based entirely on renewable hydrogen.  The SMART-H2 (Sustainable Marine and Road Transport - Hydrogen in Iceland) is an initiative to support the introduction of hydrogen transport technology by a range of companies into different customer niches.  SMART-H2 will involve hydrogen cars, operation of a fuel cell system on a boat, further development of hydrogen distribution, as well as research.

SMART-H2 will be one of the largest H2 demonstration projects in the world.  It will begin in July 2007 with the introduction of two A-Class fuel cell cars from DaimlerChrysler and ten retrofitted Toyotoa Prius hydrogen cars in September.  Customers will select the type of car that best suits their fleet and buy or lease them.  Up to 30 cars will be provided depending on demand and availability of the cars.

An Auxilliary Power Unit based on fuel cells and gaseous hydrogen will be designed in Iceland and installed on a 150 passenger whale watching vessel operating out of Reykjavik.

From the end of April 2008 people in Iceland will be able to rent a hydrogen car for an environmentally friendly sightseeing tour in Reykjavik.
