HOW MUCH BIOFUEL CAN EUROPE PRODUCE?

HOW MUCH BIOFUEL CAN EUROPE PRODUCE WITHOUT HARMING THE ENVIRONMENT

This very important question is asked as the basis for a study recently released by the European Environment Agency (EEA Report 7/2006).

The purpose of the Report was to assess how much biomass could technically be available for energy production without increasing pressures on the environment.  The study looked at acquiring biomass from agriculture, forestry and waste, and used a common set of general assumptions and projections based on the EEA report European environment outlook.    These assumptions are detailed in the Report.

The study concluded that signficant amounts of biomass can technically be available to support ambitious renewable energy targets, even if strict environmental constraints are applied.  The potential is claimed to be sufficient to reach the European renewable energy target in 2010 which requires an estimated 150 million tonnes of oil equivalent of biomass use.
